the everlasting blank page

Always the blank page, forever filled with dread and possibility. No matter how many things I create, I fight with it. I used to think it was something that would go away, that there was some level I'd reach where ideas just flowed effortlessly to page or screen or instrument.

When I'd at last given up on that, I started noticing something about my favourite artists. They were also dissatisfied on some fundamental level, even with their best work. It was never having written the perfect song or story that drove them.

Always the blank page. Because your best work only reveals to you all the things you didn't notice before, how much further you have to go.
