Oh my fellow Canadians… we have had an interesting week, haven’t we? I found myself alternating between excitement over my country actually being represented by a majority (contrary to what one might assume by our Conservative leadership, we actually voted 63% or so in favor of political parties from the left) and anxiety because if a coalition government was not stalled, the overwhelming majority of idiots in my particular province (the lovely Alberta) might truly end up trying to forge ahead with this western separatism bullshit. Alas, Prime Minister Steve Harper ran like a baby to our Governor General and got Parliament prorogued – i.e. shut down – for a couple of months, hoping that the parties he’s been pissing on ever since he won a minority government will start wimping out again.
How dare I call my fellow anti-Coalition Albertans stupid? Well, perhaps some quotes from one of their groups on Facebook to illustrate:
“Canada has never had a civil war. But if they threaten this nations constitution and democracy then that certainly warrants action.”
“How about just nuking Quebec, we would then have a majority Conservative government, and we wouldn’t have to deal with the retarted bilingualism crap. plus we could still Hire Newfies to do all our crap work, like we already do.”
“Its treason, and the last person to be hung for it was Louis Riel. I say we update history a little and add 3 more names to the list. Starting with Ducceppe and ending with Dion. ”
“This is treason…..it is a coup. When ever a body attempts to over throw an elected body, outside of the democratic process it is a coup.”
“They should be put on trial for treason. Even if they are found not guilty, I think they should still be charged and investigated. It would send a powerful message.”
“[Separation is] Possibly the only solution to the current unbelievable situation”
“Democracy = the voice of the people. They managed to throw enough support behind ONE party to form a government. No one supported any of the opposition parties enough to lead. What is so hard to understand about that?”
Rather embarrassing, isn’t it? I have left spelling, grammar, and logic errors intact as to not downplay the lack of education that wealthy people can have in the oil rich west. And I’ve left the names out to protect the anonymity of the loud and dumb.
For everyone else who hasn’t been taken in by Slick Steve, check out this awesome interview with Naomi Klein (not to be confused with Alberta’s former drunkard Premier), who recently came out with Shock Doctrine (which I have unfortunately not gotten around to reading) and is most famous for the seminal No Logo. She focuses especially on the idea of proportional representation, which Canada is long overdue for, and the NDP has had on their platform to introduce for a long time. It’s a shame things went the way they did on Thursday, but hopefully the fire in the Liberal, NDP, and Bloc parties bellies stays lit. This ain’t over until Slick Steve manages a majority, something that is hopefully even further from coming about after this blunder.
The Bloc. That really enraged everyone didn’t it? Unfortunately, the reaction of anti-Coalition folks, including that of Harper himself, may actually make the party ramp up its separatist rhetoric. Anyone who’s listened to the debates and done their research over the last couple of elections would know that the issue of separation was being more and more downplayed due to its waning popularity. For the last few years, the Bloc has been more of a regional party than a separatist one, much like the Alliance and Reform parties that ended up merging with the PCs to create the current Conservative Party. So again, thanks to provinces like mine we might actually have to worry about the whole separatism issue on a number of fronts. Dumbasses.
Well, it’s now time to bring out the big guns and invoke Godwin’s Law. Desperate times come for desperate measures, as they say. Anyone mourning over being so close to real, functioning democracy should get a good laugh out of this hilarious remix that BoingBoing posted:
